British Masters 10k Championships 2013

There was success on the women's side at the SVHC Masters 10k Road Race which this year incorporated the BMAF 10k Championships. Runners from Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales descended on Pollok Park with Bernadette, Erica and Anji scooping team silver in the W45 category.

Of the seven Harriers racing Crispin, John, Stephen and Erica had all raced on the same course in last week's Tour of Clydeside's Bella Belter 10k while Mark, Bernadette and Anji were new to the course. With 196 runners in this high-quality field in action, the race would prove a good test as the summer racing season draws to a close.

Crispin led the charge from the gun while Mark wasn't too far behind while Bernadette, Erica and Anji set off at a similar pace together. John and Stephen soon followed behind with the aim of beating last week's times.

The runners started to spread out quite quickly with packs forming and gaps emerging between them. After his fast start to battle for position, Crispin started to move through the field into the top 20. Bernadette started to increase the tempo after the first couple of kilometres and began to move away from Erica and Anji who were never too far behind.

Despite having the Mull Half Marathon in his legs from the previous Sunday, Crispin clocked 34:27 to finish only narrowly outside his PB but considerably quicker than his Bella Belter time. Mark was next in 37:54 followed by Bernadette who stormed the second half to finish in 42:23. Erica and Anji were separated by less than a minute, 43:35 and 44:27 respectively. John narrowly missed a sub 50 clocking by a couple of seconds but improved by 15s from the Bella Belter while Stephen finished 41s sooner than he had the previous week.

With this year's race incorporating the British Championships, it wasn't just SVHC medals on offer. Bernadette, Erica and Anji combined to win team silver behind Edinburgh AC in the W45 category and Erica scooped an individual bronze in the W55 age group to cap off a successful day for the club.
