Renfrewshire 5 Mile Championships

Thirty-four club members competed at the annual Renfrewhire 5 Mile Road Race held at Battery Park, Greenock on Sunday the 3rd of February.

Runners headed off into a biting cold wind around the park before moving onto the sidewalk towards the Greenock Esplanade and the turning point for the run back to the park. The wind had been on the backs of the runners on the way out and as is usually the case nobody noticed until the return leg was into a blistering gale.

Many of the Bella had packed well with Thomas McDonald lying in 5th position leading the Harriers charge, Stevie Prentice next followed by Andy Campbell and Crispin Walsh. On the females side Clare MacAulay and Louise Mitchell ran stride for stride in perfect unison followed by Julia Harris, Bernie O'Neil and several other Bellas including Kristina Greig, Anji Carson and Erica (making her second comback outing in a week) close behind.

Positions remained almost the same until the last section of the race with Thomas well ahead to be the first club man home, Crispin put in a charge managing to open a gap between him and Andy. Other positions also changed both for the females and other Bellas in the latter stages, a testament of endurance and Tony's winter training paying dividend. Leading the females were Clare & Louise neck and neck in their private war of attrition, somehow with about half a mile left Louise took a wrong turn alowing Clare a slight advantage, giving no quarter Clare put the foot on the gas leaving Louise adrift by a few metres, showing what a good competitor she is Louise also put the foot down chasing Clare to the line in a sprint finish to just edge out Clare and be the first female home for the club.

In the men's division Crispin managed to edge past Stevie by a couple of seconds and claim second club member home. The rest of the males and females packed well to achieve a brilliant 2nd team place for both the males and females and record an historic moment for the club.

At the prizegiving it was mentioned by the organisers that Bellahouston Harriers were continuing their meteoric rise by claiming several prizes at this championship race, a first for many years.

Medals awarded:

  • 2nd Female team / 3rd Female overall / 2nd & 3rd Female Masters
  • 2nd Male team / 1st Junior / 1st Male Master v40 / 1st Male Master v60.

Well done to everyone who put it on the line on a great day out.

Onwards and Upwards.
